A low-calorie sweetener called xylitol used in many reduced-sugar foods and consumer products such as gum and toothpaste may be linked to nearly twice the risk of heart attacks, stroke and death in people who consume the highest levels of the sweetener, a new study found.

“We gave healthy volunteers a typical drink with xylitol to see how high the levels would get and they went up 1,000-fold,” said senior study author Dr. Stanley Hazen, director of the Center for Cardiovascular Diagnostics and Prevention at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute.
“When you eat sugar, your glucose level may go up 10% or 20% but it doesn’t go up a 1,000-fold,” said Hazen, who also directs the Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Microbiome and Human Health.

“Humankind has not experienced levels of xylitol this high except within the last couple of decades when we began ingesting completely contrived and sugar-substituted processed foods,” he added.

Worrisome blood clots occur
In 2023, the same researchers found similar results for another low-calorie sweetener called erythritol, which is used as a bulking sugar in stevia, monkfruit and keto reduced-sugar products.

Additional lab and animal research presented in both papers revealed erythritol and xylitol may cause blood platelets to clot more readily. Clots can break off and travel to the heart, triggering a heart attack, or to the brain, triggering a stroke.

In the new study  on xylitol, “differences in platelet behavior were seen even after a person consumed a modest quantity of xylitol in a drink typical of a portion consumed in real life,” said Dr. Matthew Tomey, a cardiologist at Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital in New York City, who was not involved in the study.

“These experiments are interesting but alone do not prove that platelet abnormalities are to account for a linkage between xylitol and clinical events,” said Tomey, who is also an assistant professor of medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Judge Aileen Cannon had been on the federal bench for little more than a year when a senior judge offered to preside over one of her first criminal trials in her isolated south Florida courthouse.

“It’s very lonely,” Senior Judge Paul C. Huck told CNN of Fort Pierce, a small fishing and citrus community on the edge of the Southern District of Florida where Cannon is the only federal judge. “It’s a pretty sleepy town with a pretty sleepy courtroom.”

Huck ultimately presided over the March 2022 criminal trial – not because Cannon needed help, he said, but because he enjoys volunteering for trials in courts across Florida.

“I thought I’d go up there and just spend some time with her and get to know her better,” Huck said of Cannon, whom he recalled as “very smart” and “very personable.”

Two years later, Cannon is now presiding over one of the most consequential and complex cases in America: the criminal prosecution of former president Donald Trump over his handling of the nation’s secrets. And she’s attracting nationwide scrutiny for how she’s approached the case.
Since Trump was first indicted a year ago, Cannon has dragged out the proceedings in ways that have flummoxed legal scholars and put a trial initially scheduled to begin last month on hold indefinitely.

Several attorneys who have practiced in front of Cannon – and who spoke to CNN for this story – pointed to her isolation as one explanation for her conduct. Cannon’s solitary post in the Fort Pierce courthouse, one that rarely sees high-profile action, deprives her of the informal, day-to-day interactions with more seasoned judges who sit at the other courthouses and could offer her advice, the lawyers told CNN.

Есть пирамидообразные проекты, срок жизни которых может исчисляться не месяцами, а годами. Причем все это время ее организаторы открыто ведут публичную пропаганду своего проекта. Как правило, многолетние проекты создаются на основе легально зарегистрированных организаций. Кроме того, их «пирамидный продукт», как правило, должен быть ориентирован на широкую аудиторию, а скорость развития проекта должна быть умеренной. В этом случае пирамиде удается добиться длительного поступательного развития и по настоящему широкой известности.

Один из самых известных долгоиграющих, а потому, по нашему мнению, опасных для кошельков участников проектов – жилищный кооператив «Бест Вей», созданный в 2014 году бизнесменом Романом Василенко. Роман Викторович – фигура яркая, поэтому сначала немного о нем.

Говоря о Романе Василенко, как о бизнесмене, надо всегда оговаривать, что речь идет о сетевом бизнесе.  Какой же трудовой путь привел нашего героя -  выпускника Ярославского высшего военно-финансового училища, - к «Бест Вею»?

В биографии на сайте romanvasilenko.com, по всей видимости, сам г-н Василенко максимально лаконично описывает период с момента ухода с финансовой службы в военно-морском флоте России в 1998 году до создания им кооператива «Бест Вей»: «С 1996 по 2012 годы Роман Василенко посещал и окончил курсы MBA в Венгрии, Австрии, Франции, на Кипре, Маврикии, в Швейцарии, США». То есть, получается, что как минимум двенадцать лет, Роман только и делал, что учился? Впрочем, в других местах говорится, что все-таки и в эти годы он занимался и предпринимательской деятельностью.

В частности, говорится о его работе в фирме «SI Save Invest Ltd», где он «прошел путь от простого консультанта до управляющего директора». Швейцарская компания, которая, действительно, зарегистрирована в кантоне Цуг, существует до сих пор, но почему-то Гугл в 2020 году не зафиксировал ни одного поискового запроса с этим названием ни в одной стране мира, кроме России.
